Ganesh Puja, also known as Ganesh Chaturthi or Ganpati Puja, is the Hindu festival celebrated on the birthday (rebirth) of Lord Ganesha, the son of Shiva and Parvati. He is extensively worshiped as the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune and habitually invoked at the commencement of any new venture or at the outset of travel.
The festival is also recognized as Vinayaka Chaturthi (“Festival of Ganesha”). Ganesh Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chaturthi is an important Hindu festival; dedicated to the Lord of wisdom – Ganesh. It falls on Shukla Paksha Chaturthi of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada. It is a 10-day festival that begins with the welcoming of Lord Ganesha idol at home or in private pandals.
This year it falls on August 22, 2020. It ends on Anant Chaturdashi by immersing the idol in a river or sea on September 01, 2020.
Getting this puja done at your home under the guidance of the right Pandit/Pujari/Purohit will ensure that you and your family is blessed with special blessings given by Lord Ganesha. They do their best to please Lord Ganesha and organize puja at your houses with proper puja vidhi and other ceremonial rituals.
Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with great devotion all over India. People bring home murtis (Idols) of Lord Ganesha and celebrate the festival by worshiping the Lord in a special way for a day and a half, 3 days, 5 days, 7 days or 11 days depending on the family tradition and commitment of each individual.
On the last day of worship the idol is taken out in a colorful and musical procession to be immersed traditionally in a water body, called Ganpati Visarjan.
The idol immersion days are the first, third, seventh and tenth days. The immersion ceremony is another grand affair where devotees carry the idol in joyous processions accompanied by thumping music and dancing to the beats of the dhol. Devotees throw gulal at one another and perform a final aarti before immersing the idol in a water body like a lake or sea. The Ganpati festival in Maharashtra, especially Mumbai, is equivalent to the Durga Puja celebrations in Kolkata, West Bengal.
What is the Significance of Anant Chaturdashi?
Anant Chaturdashi is the last day of the Hindu festival of Ganeshotsav. It is generally the tenth day after Ganesh Chaturthi.
After 10 days of Ganesh Chaturthi, his visit comes to an end and prayers are done to thank him for his auspicious visit and all the blessings he bought with him. After that to signify the god Ganesh’s departure, you must escort his statue out, amid ceremony and immerse the statue in a body of water with prayers.
You may be wondering why the immersion of Ganesh idols concludes on this day. Why is it special? In Sanskrit, Anant refers to eternal or infinite energy, or immortality. The day is actually devoted to the worship of Lord Anant, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu (the preserver and sustainer of life, also referred to as the supreme being). Chaturdashi means the “fourteenth”. In this case, the occasion falls on the 14th day of the lunar fortnight during the month of Bhadrapada in the Hindu calendar.
